Monitored Dosage System (MDS)

Taking lots of medicines can get complicated fast. An MDS helps you stay on track by organising your tablets into clearly labelled compartments for each time of day.

What is an MDS?

A Monitored Dosage System (MDS) is a pre-packed tray that organises your tablets into separate, clearly labelled compartments. Each compartment contains the tablets you need at a specific time of day.

Instead of juggling multiple boxes and instructions, you follow one simple, visual routine.

Good to know

  • An MDS is prepared according to your prescription
  • It's usually supplied weekly
  • Some items can't go in a tray (e.g. liquids, inhalers, "when required" medicines)

Who is it for?

Taking 4+ regular medicines

If you're taking four or more tablets at different times each day, an MDS can help reduce the mental load of remembering what goes when.

Memory or dexterity concerns

Helpful if you're finding it hard to remember doses, struggling with blister packs, or having trouble reading small labels.

Support from family or carers

Makes it easier for family members or carers to help, with clear visual prompts and reduced risk of errors.

How it works

  1. 1

    We'll review your medicines

We'll sit down with you for 10-15 minutes, go through what you're taking, and work out if an MDS makes sense for your situation. Bring your current medicines if you can.

  2. 2

    We'll prepare your tray

Your tablets get organised into compartments, morning, lunchtime, evening, bedtime, labelled by day. Everything follows your prescription exactly.

  3. 3

    You'll collect each week

You'll get a fresh tray weekly. Collect it yourself or arrange for family to pick it up. We can discuss delivery if that works better.

  4. 4

    We'll keep it updated

If your doctor changes your prescription, we'll update the tray. If it's mid-week, we'll explain the safest way to handle the change.

Benefits

  • Helps reduce missed or double doses
  • Makes complex routines easier to follow
  • Supports independence and confidence
  • Clear structure for patients and carers

What can't go in the tray?

Some medicines aren't suitable for MDS packing (e.g. liquids, creams, inhalers, and many "when required" medicines). We'll explain what stays separate and why.

The goal is clarity and safety, not forcing everything into one tray.

Frequently asked questions

Is an MDS right for everyone?

No, it depends on your medicines and your needs. We'll assess suitability and explain the options clearly.

Is there a charge for the MDS service?

If you pay for your prescriptions, you'll pay the standard NHS prescription charge. If you're exempt from prescription charges (e.g., over 60, under 16, or have a valid exemption certificate), your MDS is free. We'll explain costs during your assessment.

How do I collect my MDS tray each week?

You can collect it from the pharmacy yourself, or we can arrange for a family member or carer to collect on your behalf. We can also discuss delivery options if needed.

What if my prescription changes mid-week?

We'll advise the safest approach. In some cases, we may need to issue an updated tray or provide guidance on what changes immediately. Your safety is always the priority.

Do I still get my other medicines?

Yes, anything not suitable for the tray (like inhalers, liquids, eye drops, or creams) will be supplied separately with clear instructions.

How long does the assessment take?

Usually 10-15 minutes. We'll review your current medicines, discuss your routine, and explain whether an MDS would help you.

What happens if I miss a dose or take the wrong compartment?

Call the pharmacy immediately for advice. We'll guide you on the safest next steps based on which medicine was affected.
